Rug Placement Visualizer for Standard Rooms

Rug fit is a centre-and-edges problem. Once you fix the rug rectangle at the middle of the room rectangle, the leftover distance splits evenly along each axis. That split tells you how much floor shows on every side. This page works one fixed example, then hands you a converter for package labels quoted in inches. Delivery limits come next, because a rug that fits the floor still has to fit the route to it.

Select cm or inches. Use rotate to compare landscape and portrait rugs. Coverage is rug area divided by room area, shown as a percentage.

Centre the rug, then read the four edges

Place the example 300 by 200 cm rug at the centre of the 400 by 300 cm room. Along the width the leftover 100 cm splits into 50 cm at each side; along the depth the leftover 100 cm also splits into 50 cm at each front and back edge. Rotating the rug to 200 x 300 cm leaves 100 cm clear on the left and right, but none at the front and back. Read each edge separately because furniture legs often sit on one edge and leave another bare.

Convert inches before you compare packages

Package labels and imported furniture often quote inches. NIST records that one inch equals exactly 25.4 mm, or 2.54 cm, and that 100 cm makes one metre. Convert first, then compare against your room figures in one unit. A 64-inch width converts to 162.56 cm by multiplying 64 by 2.54, which you can check against your tape reading.

  1. Read the inch figure from the label or listing.
  2. Multiply by 2.54 to obtain centimetres.
  3. Compare the converted figure with your wall and doorway readings.

Check the route before you order

A rug or sofa that fits the room can still fail at the door. IKEA's customer-service guidance advises checking package dimensions and the delivery route before purchasing, since narrow doors and stairs may block large packages. Measure the narrowest door frame, any stair turn, and the lift interior if relevant, then compare those readings with the package figures. This is a practical check you perform yourself, separate from the footprint arithmetic above.

Does centring guarantee a good layout?

No. Centring gives even edges on a rectangle. Real rooms may need the rug shifted toward the seating, which changes each edge distance.

Where do the area figures come from?

The 6 m² rug area and 12 m² room area follow from multiplying the entered sides: 3.0 by 2.0 and 4.0 by 3.0. Coverage divides the first by the second.

Do you store my conversions?
